Karoshi (#64)
Japanese language has a word for almost everything. Japan also has one of the most rigorous work environments, and it takes it's toll.
Karoshi describes a death, which is related to overwork, usually from a heart attack or a stroke. In the last decades, the problem was getting more and more attention. Some companies started to introduce nap policies, where workers were allowed to nap during the day.
Substantial improvement came in 2018, where a work reform bill was passed. The new law makes it illegal to not take some paid holidays every year. This is a relief for many workers, because taking some time off was previously frowned upon and difficult due to social pressure.
Karoshi isn't only a Japanese phenomenon. The WHO Occupational Burden of Disease Application shares a comprehensive dataset about this public health problem. A related fact was also #22 about the 996 working hour system.
Speaking of Japanese terms. Another one is age-otori. It's about an entirely different subject and I'll tell you more about it tomorrow.
