Ignacio Anaya (#159)
You've probably never heard of him before, but I'm sure you've eaten what is named after him.
Ignacio Anaya was a Mexican who worked in a restaurant near the Texan boarder. In 1943, a couple of women – US Army wives – entered the restaurant and were really hungry. The chef however, was nowhere to be found. To satisfy the ladies, Anaya had to get creative and whipped up a small snack. He grated some cheese over tostadas, put them under the broiler and in the end decorated them with jalapeños.
And by now you guessed it, Ignacio Anaya's nickname was: Nacho.
The dish was a hit and made it's way to the menu as Nachos Especiales. And 80 years later, Nachos are as popular as ever.
But the question remains, what do they have to do with the rise of vampire myths and a very hard to pronounce word? Oh wait, that's another fact.
Have a nice weekend!
