Bowdlerization (#99)
Bowdlerization is a term, which is used for censoring parts in literature, which are deemed harmful. In English, it's also known as expurgation.
The term was coined after Thomas Bowdler, who published new editions of Shakespeare's plays, which he deemed more appropriate for women and children.
Bowdlerized works are also known as fig-leaves editions, in analogy to some Renaissance paintings, where there were no genitals, but only fig leaves.
In fact #59 I talked about algospeak, which could be considered a form of self-bowdlerization in times of social media. Also, some automatic wordfilters go over the top sometimes. There's an example with the word assassination, which became: buttbuttination.
Sounds like a totally different criminal offence to me.
