Bird Guns (#175)
When veganism started to become more and more popular, I learned that many things are not vegan, even tough it's often not apparent why (like wine for example).
Flying in an airplane is the same. Why? Because of bird guns.
Bird guns or cannons are special weapons used in testing aircrafts. And they work just as the name suggests: you load them with birds, which then get ejected by air pressure at high velocity.
In the calibration phase of the cannon, it is loaded with gelatin birds or poultry from the grocery store. When it comes to the real testing, they also use real birds, with heads, feathers, feet etc. They only use dead birds though.
A very famous bird-strike incident is the Miracle on the Hudson in 2009. An airplane departing from New York's La Guardia Airport flew into a flock of Canada Geese, which caused both engines to shut down. The pilots were nevertheless able to land the airplane on the Hudson river, without anybody getting injured.
